Official and media figures describe the same people from different vantage points and are never added together.

Measles remains a global watch item because it is spreading wherever immunity gaps have opened, not because the virus itself is new. WHO’s latest published picture still points to broad resurgence: in 2025 it assessed the Region of the Americas as high risk and the global risk as moderate, while Bangladesh’s 2026 nationwide outbreak was assessed as high risk nationally. Morocco’s large outbreak was still being reported in 2025, and WHO has repeatedly linked recent flare-ups to missed routine vaccination, under-vaccinated communities, and importations. In the last 7 days, media coverage has been dominated by the United States. Multiple outlets, citing state or federal officials, reported that New York declared a disaster emergency and that Pennsylvania passed 1,000 cases; a smaller cluster was also reported in South Australia. But the current press picture is noisy: U.S. national totals differ across outlets, as do Pennsylvania and New York counts. Bangladesh coverage also diverges sharply from the latest WHO-published figures, with one media report claiming 900 deaths while WHO’s April 2026 DON described 166 suspected measles-related deaths and 30 confirmed measles-related deaths over the period it covered. What matters most now is whether current U.S. outbreaks consolidate into sustained multi-state transmission, whether Bangladesh’s outbreak has truly receded, and whether countries close remaining vaccination gaps fast enough to stop repeated importation-driven outbreaks.

This is a high-concern watch item because measles is one of the most transmissible human infections and current activity is spread across multiple regions. The virus is not new and good countermeasures exist, but uneven vaccination coverage, travel-linked introductions, and inconsistent reporting keep allowing preventable outbreaks to grow.

Situation as of 6 Oct 2026

Official

WHO’s latest formal outbreak notices describe a continuing international resurgence driven by immunity gaps. In the WHO Region of the Americas, WHO said in April 2025 that regional risk was high while global risk remained moderate. WHO’s Bangladesh DON in April 2026 assessed national risk as high because transmission affected most districts. WHO’s Morocco DON assessed national and regional risk as moderate. WHO’s 2025 United States DON treated the U.S. outbreak as an unusual event notified under IHR. No WHO emergency declaration equivalent to a PHEIC is in the sources reviewed here.

Media, unverified

Current media reporting is centered on the United States. Multiple outlets, citing CDC or state officials, report that New York has declared a disaster emergency, Pennsylvania has exceeded 1,000 cases, and U.S. national case counts are near 3,900. A smaller current cluster was also reported in South Australia. One Bangladesh feature frames the outbreak as having caused 900 deaths and as a warning about vaccine backsliding.

Control measures

The core countermeasures remain the same worldwide: raise routine two-dose coverage, run catch-up or reactive vaccination campaigns, isolate cases, trace contacts, strengthen laboratory confirmation and surveillance, reinforce infection prevention and control, support hospitals, and provide vitamin A and supportive care. WHO described nationwide or large-scale vaccination and surveillance measures in Bangladesh, Morocco, and the Americas. In current U.S. reporting, New York has escalated with a disaster emergency while state and federal health authorities continue outbreak control.
