Kenya reports first Ebola case; Irkutsk still says no plague

Daily brief ·

The main new development is Ebola spread to Kenya: several media reports citing Kenyan and WHO Regional Office officials say Kenya confirmed its first linked case and death in Nairobi. In Irkutsk Oblast, officials still report no plague cases while media continued to report one fatal pneumonia case and contact monitoring. Other movement came from measles reports in Pennsylvania and New York, a locally acquired dengue case in Broward County, and a local diphtheria report from Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory.

The sharpest disagreement remains in Irkutsk Oblast: officials report 0 confirmed plague cases and 0 suspected cases, while media report 1 death and about 200 contacts under observation, and some social or unverified posts claim 2 deaths. Ebola totals also diverge: WHO's latest retrieved public DRC figures are 7890 confirmed cases and 3799 deaths, while media reports cite up to 8544 confirmed cases and 4114 deaths across the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, unverified; in Kenya, contacts are reported as 27 or 28, with one report also mentioning 23 contacts. Measles figures in Pennsylvania also differ, with officials cited as reporting 4 deaths in one outlet and 5 deaths in others, and about 1000 or 1004 cases.

Watch next for a direct Kenyan health ministry or WHO update on contact tracing and any secondary Ebola cases, and for Irkutsk laboratory results that could confirm or rule out Yersinia pestis. Also watch for fresher official totals on the high-watch Ebola, diphtheria, measles, respiratory season, antimicrobial resistance and cholera records, and on elevated dengue, filovirus, mpox, polio, chikungunya and yellow fever.
